Blueberry harvesting in the southern hemisphere is about to begin. Pickers in some countries have started working, but the harvest is still limited. European importers are looking forward to the beginning of the new import season. Due to the high summer temperatures, the European blueberry season has ended prematurely and there is a threat of supply shortage. So some countries hoard frozen blueberries to sell better prices.
Argentine blueberry season begins with good prospects
The Argentine blueberry export season has begun. Due to the cool weather in all growing areas, the blueberry season has been postponed, about two to three weeks behind last year. It is expected to be 158,000 tons, an increase of 15%. Organic blueberry production is expected to be 3,000 tons, accounting for 16% of total production. 35% of the exported goods (ie 6,500 tons) are transported by sea.
The amount of international tax rebates received by growers has dropped from 6% to 3.25%. “The transaction is in cents per kilogram, so this will have a major impact,” one trader said. This measure will have a direct impact on the performance of growers.
Peru exports more blueberries to China
The outlook for this season is very good and exports are expected to set a record. The blueberry industry is evolving and has become more important than asparagus. "This year, the value of blueberry exports will reach about 580 million US dollars, an increase of 60% compared with last year." Blueberry Trade Association said.
In addition to the south, plantations in the northern region are also being invested. “They’re doing well compared to other growing areas,” says one crop consultant. Earlier this year, the export target was 75,600 tons, an increase of 56% compared to the 2017/2018 season. Last year, the United States was the largest buyer of Peruvian blueberries, accounting for 48% of exports. Other major markets include the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, China and Hong Kong. Exports to China are expected to increase further this quarter, and China will rise to the third largest export market.
Chinese companies are investing in harvesting technology and researching new varieties to improve output quality and respond to fierce competition in the domestic market. Because most of China's blueberry season overlaps, so competition is fierce, growers must strive to stand out in this market. Another way to reach out to more consumers is to pick and drop their own, and consumers can pick their own blueberries in these blueberry fields, which has become a popular outdoor activity..........
